Welcome to Chess!
The purpose of the chess club is to help children learn the
basics of the game. Chess can enhance problem solving
and logical thinking as players begin to plan out
moves and strategies.
Chess club is open to players in grades kindergarten
through 8th, novice and more experienced players. We
are an informal group, playing for the love of the game.
We would love to have any parents volunteer to help us as well!
We begin the year covering the basic chess moves for the newcomers, and our returning players will deepen their understanding by helping others and by looking at different strategies. We demonstrate the use of different strategies, including traps, openings, and sacrificing pieces. We introduce the use of clocks to become familiar with them, and also to encourage us to begin to use more time to examine possible moves on the board.
Throughout the year, there are opportunities to participate in chess tournaments and chess camps. The camps and tournaments are often sponsored by the Nashville Chess center, although some are sponsored through other organizations. Some tournaments require membership in the United States Chess Federation. Membership includes a subscription to chess life magazine, and family memberships are offered. You may also choose to join the Nashville Chess center. Again, they have individual and family memberships offered. Membership in the Nashville chess center would qualify you for discounts for chess camps and to attend Chess for Kids on Sundays from 1-4. Neither membership is required for our HRA chess club. Tournaments begin in September and go through March.
We meet once a week for one hour-date and time will be sent home at the beginning of the school year.
Come and check us out!
